75 years as an active industry voice

The history of Baltkran is inseparable from the history of the formation of the Kaliningrad region. The enterprise, the same age as the region, was created in extremely difficult times on the basis of three small workshops that previously worked for the German military departments, and began to release the first products a few months after the end of the Great Patriotic War, in October 1945. In a special project dedicated to its 75th anniversary, based on excerpts from newspapers and foreign magazines, as well as reviews of leading experts, industry representatives and well-known politicians, we show how one of the oldest factories developed in the post-war period and became one of the key players in crane manufacturing.

"On the stream"

The Kaliningrad Foundry and Mechanical Plant of the Ministry of Heavy Industry produces valuable drilling equipment, including a new type of metal drilling rigs. By the end of the year, we have to deliver 15 such rigs. Urgent measures were needed that would dramatically change the production process. The engineers and technicians of the plant developed a new technology, which made it possible to assemble the rigs by a high-speed flow method.

The assemblers worked hard. Socialist competition for the early completion of the assembly of the rigs was widely developed between the teams. The brigades of comrades Povarov, Gzhelsky and Kulikov have successfully coped with their tasks. People who recently had no idea about assembly work have successfully mastered the difficult skill of assembling metal structures.

Crane factory

Our repair and mechanical plant of the Stroymekhanizatsiya trust can rightfully be called a construction veteran in the Kaliningrad region. It is twenty years old. Over the years, it has manufactured about six hundred cranes.

Last year, the plant successfully mastered the production of an MKG crawler crane with a lifting capacity of 6.3 tons. This unit was highly appreciated at the National Economy Achievement Exhibition - it was awarded a second degree diploma.

Yuri Matochkin, head of the regional administration, member of the Federation Council

We spent several hours at your facility with great pleasure! In difficult times of transition to a market economy, you were able to find not only your place in the world of reforms, but also to determine the right course for the well-being of the enterprise and each member of the team. We know that all this is not easy, a hard work on the modernization of production is in progress and a reassessment of many moral and ethical criteria is taking place.

I wish you health and success.

American President Lines (USA)

Russian company Baltkran. together with Noell Cranes, delivered to APL ten (10) RMG's with a capacity of 50 LT. The RMG's were manufactured and assembled in Kaliningrad and transported fully erected to the APL terminal at the Port of Los Angeles in California, USA. The RMG's were commissioned in 1997 and have been in continuous service at the on-dock microbial rail facility at APL's terminal to the present time.

The RMG's have provided excellent performance through these years with high efficiency and service availability. APL is very satisfied with the quality and service that these RMG's have provided By operating these electric RMG's, we have been able to significantly lower air emissions relative to alternative operating equipment. This has helped us meet the terminal commitments for better air quality in the Los Angeles basin.

Sincerely, David K. Olsen Director. Engineering American President Linos, Ltd.

Baltkran manufatures the 100th nuclear crane

The Russian manufacturer Baltkran from Kaliningrad earlier this year manufactured the 100th crane for the nuclear industry for the turbine hall of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant. The 500 ton crane will primarily be used for the installation of the turbine and generator stators, and will also handle other heavy loads. The crane is equipped with a double trolley transverse movement system, which allows tandem lifting and precise assembly thanks to its micro-movement capability. Baltkran is currently producing a similar crane for the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant.

Over the past 18 months, Baltkran has received many orders for the transport industry. Sales grew by 9%. The largest number of orders were received for container cranes, accounting for 56% of the total number of orders. And this position remains the strongest in terms of demand, among crane-building enterprises from Russia "- explains N.V Golovina ." The economy of the Russian Federation continues to develop, and is stable enough at the moment to be able to observe stable investments in container terminals, and as a result, the growth of orders in this industry. Thus, Baltkran supplied 13 container cranes to various regions of the country within two years."

Baltkran RTGs make their debut

Crane manufacturer Baltkran, based in Russia’s Kaliningrad ex-clave, is best known for RMGs for rail terminals and industrial applications, including cranes for operation in extreme climatic conditions. In a significant development, the company is now also sup-plying RTGs. A machine was recently delivered to a rail terminal in Brest, the key rail ‘gauge break’ facility near the Belarus-Poland border.

Business has been growing strongly there, due largely to increasing China-Western Europe intermodal rail flows.
